Through this programme of study, you will come to understand that History is far more than names, dates, rulers and wars. To properly appreciate Maltese history, you need to do so within a strong contextual framework that takes into consideration historical developments as well as historiographical practices. The main aim of this programme is to enable you to gain a deep understanding of the history of Malta. It aims to deliver a very structured programme of learning through which it will build up your knowledge and expertise of History. In the first year of the course, you will have a chronological and methodological accent which will give you a clear picture of developments and historical debates, while the second year will have more of a thematic accent, through which it will be possible to delve into particular aspects of the past.

Requirement for award of Diploma in Maltese History in Context: 60ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Diploma in Maltese History in Context under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

provide an outline account of Maltese history and highlight the archives that are essential to its study;
grasp the basic notions of what studying history entails;
illustrate key developments in Maltese history in prehistoric/ancient times to the Middle Ages;
list pivotal moments in modern and contemporary times;
identify the importance of military and naval dimensions to wider politico-economic processes; and,
illustrate the importance of art and its manifestations.

The Diploma (and the Certificate option) will aim to foster your intellectual, analytical, critical and organisational skills that will be of value in any future career. While a diploma/certificate cannot be compared to an undergraduate degree, the experience of History graduates in recent years shows that there are many and varied work environments where a proper grounding in History is an asset and much appreciated.

Furthermore, it is envisaged that it may be possible for you to transfer some of your study-units towards a degree in History, or the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, should you decide to persevere with your studies.
